Villa San Marco is one of the largest and most luxurious Roman villas found in the Stabiae area, located on the ridge of the Varano hill. Its name derives from a chapel dedicated
to St. Mark, built in the 18th century near the villa.
The villa was discovered between 1749 and 1754 during Bourbon excavations and subsequently investigated systematically between 1950 and 1962. Covering approximately 11,000 square metres, it has a
complex architectural structure with residential, thermal and reception areas.
Among the most significant elements are the thermal baths, with calidarium, tepidarium and frigidarium, and the frescoes decorating the walls of the rooms, depicting mythological scenes
and landscapes. The layout of the rooms follows the contours of the land, offering a panoramic view of the sea.
Villa San Marco is an extraordinary example of Roman architecture and decoration, bearing witness to the luxury and refinement of the aristocratic residences of the time. It is now open to the
public, offering an immersive experience in the history and art of ancient Stabiae.
