Archaeological Museum of Stabiae

The Libero D'Orsi Archaeological Museum of Stabiae is housed in the historic Royal Palace of Quisisana, located on the slopes of the Lattari Mountains in Castellammare di Stabia. The palace, dating back to the 13th century, was originally a summer residence for the Angevin and later Bourbon monarchs.

The museum takes its name from Libero D'Orsi, a school principal and archaeologist who, starting in the 1950s, promoted excavations in the Stabiae area and the collection of artefacts. Opened in 2020 and reopened in 2024 after extensive renovation, the museum displays over 500 artefacts from the Roman villas of Stabiae, including frescoes, mosaics, marble furnishings, ceramics and bronzes.

The museum tour is enriched by multimedia and educational installations, offering visitors an immersive experience in the history of ancient Stabiae and its territory, the Ager Stabianus. The museum is a fundamental reference point for the knowledge and enhancement of Stabiae's archaeological heritage.
